Source Effects on Surface Wavefields

چکیده

We derive displacement equations for Rayleigh and Love waves in simple structural models for point sources in order to better understand source effects on their wavefields and radiation patterns. In doing so, we analytically demonstrate the existence of surface waves in these Earth models. Rayleigh and Love wave radiation patterns are found to mimic the P and SH radiation patterns, respectively. However, they differ markedly from their body wave counterparts in their amplitudes’ dependence on source depth and in their spreading geometry.

Time-shift imaging condition in seismic migration

Seismic imaging based on single-scattering approximation is based on analysis of the match between the source and receiver wavefields at every image location. Wavefields at depth are functions of space and time and are reconstructed from surface data either by integral methods (Kirchhoff migration) or by differential methods (reverse-time or wavefield extrapolation migration). Different methods...

Construction of Empirical Green’s Functions from Direct Waves, Coda Waves, and Ambient Noise in Se Tibet

Empirical Green’s functions (EGFs) between receivers can be obtained from seismic interferometry through cross-correlation of pairs of ground motion records. Full reconstruction of the Green’s function requires diffuse wavefields or a uniform distribution of (noise) sources. In practice, EGFs differ from actual Green’s functions because wavefields are not diffuse and the source-distribution not...

Physical and non-physical energy in scattered wave source-receiver interferometry.

Source-receiver interferometry allows Green's functions between sources and receivers to be estimated by means of convolution and cross-correlation of other wavefields. Source-receiver interferometry has been observed to work surprisingly well in practical applications when theoretical requirements (e.g., complete enclosing boundaries of other sources and receivers) are contravened: this paper ...

Stereographic imaging condition for wave-equation migration

Single-scattering imaging consists of two steps: wavefield extrapolation, whose goal is to reconstruct source and receiver wavefields from recorded data, and an imaging, whose goal is to extract from the extrapolated wavefields the locations where reflectors occur. Conventionally, the imaging condition indicates the presence of reflectors when the propagation time of reflections in the source a...
